As a certified Ayurveda, yoga, meditation and breathwork practitioner, Regina Rocke has a wealth of spiritual knowledge to share. After navigating her own path of great discomfort, emotional upheaval and a lot of self-loathing, she now helps people go through their own healing journeys.

We caught up with Regina to learn more about her teachings and how she holds space for people to heal.

Healer Name ( = street you grew up on + birthstone):

Penny Ruby

Specialty:

Ayurveda, Yoga, Breathwork, Meditation

Tell us how you help people heal?

My number one goal is not to take care of anyone — I invite people to enjoy the practice I’m offering and hold space for them. I don’t approach my intention as: this is going to heal you. I like to open space and the more open and curious you become, the more you’ll learn about yourself, which can come in the form of healing.

What inspired you to switch careers from dancer to spiritual practitioner?

Most of it was sustainability. I wanted to do something I loved full time and I couldn’t dance full time, so it was just about surviving here in NYC. I was into both practices, but it became very clear that I needed to find something that was just as enjoyable as dance, but more sustainable.

You share that through great discomfort, emotional upheaval and a lot of self-loathing, you came to your dharma. What did the experience of all that pain and discomfort teach you?

How to get through difficult times and how you can share that with other people. Many people who do what I do have similar experiences. People in my community have healed their own digestive issues or other imbalances to then help others do the same for themselves. Through my experience, I realized I can help people go through their own healing journeys.

How would you describe yourself as a healer?

The word healer can feel complicated, because when you’re in a session with me, I’m not laying my hands on you and healing you. I explain how to do the practice, check-in, and ask if they have intentions, which leads to what they’re going through. There are so many possibilities about what this process can show you— it can help to have an intention, but even falling asleep will show you something. I hardly hear people say they felt nothing, but resistance teaches you a lot too.

Out of all your studies in Ayurveda, yoga, meditation, tarot and breathwork — what has been your greatest discovery?

Ayurveda — I am a certified Ayurvedic Wellness Counselor. I feel so confident in understanding why things are happening with the body and how much stress can wreak havoc on your body.

You lead a lot of breathwork. What can we learn from working with our breath?

It’s an excellent tool to become aware of your body. It shows people where they’re at physically and emotionally and emphasizes more awareness of your body and emotions you may be holding. I’m so emotional and my partner is emotional. There’s so much crying in our home that it surprises me when people are surprised by emotions. Breathwork is about witnessing when you’re in your head and not connected to your body.

What’s one truth you’d like to say out loud to the collective?

 Take the time for self-care.
